Injury blow for Australian golfer

Leading Australian golfer Adam Scott has injured his knee in a surfing accident and is set to miss this week’s Australian PGA Championship. The injury occurred on Sunday during a surfing wipe out at a nearby beach.

This will come as a bitter blow to Scott who would have been looking forward to playing in the tournament on home soil and in front of a passionate Australian crowd. It would also have been a chance for him to halt his recent slide down the world rankings.

The 28-year-old has slipped to number 17 in the world during 2008 having been ranked as part of the top ten consistently over the last couple of years. Scott has even lost his status as Australia’s number on golfer as this accolade now goes to Geoff Ogilvy.

In terms of his injury though, his manager has revealed that scans will take place in the next couple of days. However, despite him missing the Australian PGA this week, he should still be fit and ready for the Australian Open in Sydney that starts next week.

This will prevent Scott with the chance of winning his first ever major championship and perhaps the fact he won’t be distracted by the PGA will help him – who knows. The golf odds certainly won’t be expecting him to win in Sydney, but with the home crowd behind him, the stage is set for him to show everyone what he is capable of.

In his career to date, Scott has won six titles on the US PGA Tour and six on the European Tour. This shows that he is more than capable of winning tournaments against the best in the world, it is just the major tournaments that seem to elude him.

Perhaps the pressure of these events gets to him because at this moment in time he is one of those players who has been labelled ‘the best player never to win a major’. However, with his injury and his recent slide down the rankings, the pressure will be off him in Sydney and maybe this will work to his advantage.

Australian high performance golf academy is located in the heart of Australia's tourist strip, affectionately called the golf coast, in Queensland the sunshine state, about 1000kms north of Sydney on the eastern seaboard.
