In the midst of leading Tennessee to a school record 31 wins, its first #1 ranking in school history, and becoming the SEC’s leading three-point shooter, Chris Lofton battled and overcame something much bigger: testicular cancer. After an interview with ESPN.com, Lofton came clean about his cancer diagnosis from March 2007 that put him through the toughest year of his life. “I cried more this past year than I have my whole life combined. I cried a river this past year,” an emotional Lofton said about what he had been through.
Days after Tennessee fell in a Sweet 16 game of the 2007 Tournament to Ohio State, tests came back positive for a tumor that would require surgery. Four days after that painful loss to the Buckeyes, Lofton discreetly went into a hospital and had surgery. Lofton, his family, and coach Bruce Pearl kept this information under wraps for an entire year, before the recently graduated Lofton finally came clean. When asked why he didn’t publicize his ordeal, Lofton simply stated, “I didn’t want to make excuses.” Instead, the 3-point assassin persevered, led his team to its best year ever, and to top it off, beat cancer. Cancer-free, Lofton now has his eyes on professional basketball.
