Ever since moving to the nation’s capital, the Washington Nationals have struggled to remain afloat. In three years in DC, the Nationals haven’t finished higher than fourth in the NL East and the franchise hasn’t had a winning season since 2003. As franchise cornerstone Ryan Zimmerman put it, this team is growing tired of being mediocre. Forced into playing in cavernous RFK Stadium, the Nationals were subjected to playing underwhelming ball in a below average ballpark. With the opening of Nationals Park ushering a new era of baseball, the home team responded by giving the fans some quality baseball, for one night at least. Zimmerman’s walk-off home run with two outs in the ninth gave Washington an exciting 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the first baseball game of the 2008 season to be played in the States. The Nationals’ magic number is 161 so let the countdown begin!

Zimmerman's home run certainly was a fitting way to debut a new home ball park. I hope the Nats provide their fans with a decent season to come but I sense far more losses than wins for at least a couple of years more.
