The Warriors and Lakers just completed the rare feat of playing consecutive games against each other on back-to-back nights, and the performance they put on Sunday and Monday nights was exquisiste. Never before has two regular season games featuring the same two teams on back to back nights be such high quality, fantastic games that every viewer could enjoy. The regular season is now characterized as high drama that is essentially an extended playoffs, but actually is the final two weeks of the season. Every game featuring the top nine teams in the West is a playoff game from here on out, and games with everything on the line like the Lakers/Warriors are going to be a common theme over the last several weeks of the season. The Lakers came away victorious in that one, and fans went away hoping that these two teams would somehow find each other in the playoffs.
After winning for only the second time in Staples, the Warriors aimed to beat the division favorite for the Pacific for the second night in a row. They jumped out on the Lakers early, grabbing a double digit lead. But, an extended dry spell doomed Golden State as LA somehow charged in front. All the while, both teams found impressive ways to keep the game as riveting as possible. LA even extended it to double digits in the final 3 minutes. That's when the Warriors pulled off their dazzling magic that's earned them a 9-2 mark in games decided by 3 points or less (tops in the Association), and fought their way to an overtime period.
In the overtime, it was more of the same as both teams made it a wonderful and meaningful regular season game to watch. Once again, Golden State found themselves with a chance to stick it to the Lakers, trailing by two with only seconds left. What happened after that can only be justified with the video below. Just listen to the announcer, he steals the show.
Golden State is clinging to the eight spot, and its unfortunate that they could lose a half game in the standings from a game like this, but I'm looking at this team and thinking, 'hey, they can beat anybody,' and it's true. The Warriors and Lakers are slated to play each other as it stands now in the Western Conference standings, but their regular season meetings have proven to be just as good as playoff games.
